International Mountain Day, celebrated every year on December 1, shines a spotlight on the urgent…
The Eastern Arc Mountains (EAMs), are a stunning haven of dense forests, unique wildlife, and rich biodiversity. Often referred to as the “Galápagos of Africa,” this ancient Mountain range hosts species found nowhere else in the World. Whether you are hiking misty paths, watching vibrant bird species, or simply enjoying the peaceful green landscapes, the EAMs offer a remarkable connection with nature. From soaring peaks to cascading waterfalls and serene valleys, every part of this region showcases the beauty of the natural World.
Despite that, the EAMs face critical threats that put their biodiversity at risk. Habitat loss due to deforestation, illegal logging, and charcoal production, along with poaching and the effects of climate change, are severely impacting the region’s ecosystems. Agricultural encroachment, invasive species, and uncontrolled fires further contribute to forest degradation.
As a result, the Eastern Arc Mountains Conservation Endowment Fund (EAMCEF) has been dedicated to supporting Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Change Initiatives since 2006. This effort includes the provision of financial support for Protected Areas such as Uzungwa Scarp, Uluguru, Mkingu, Kilombero, Amani, Chome, Magamba, Nilo, Amani Nature Forest Reserves, and Udzungwa National Park, all aimed at promoting sustainable ecosystems and enhancing climate resilience.
