The Eastern Arc Mountains Conservation Endowment Fund (EAMCEF) celebrates the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer under the theme “Ozone for Life,” emphasizing the critical role the Eastern Arc Mountains (EAMs) forests play as carbon sinks, absorbing Carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and other pollutants that indirectly affect the Ozone Layer. These forests store over 152 million tons of carbon, contributing significantly to Climate Change Mitigation.

Since 2001, EAMCEF has been instrumental in supporting Local Government Authorities, Community Based Organizations, Local Communities, Government Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Private Partners, Research and Academic Institutions in its 3 key thematic areas of Community Development and Livelihood Improvement, Biodiversity and Climate Change Research, and Conservation of Protected Areas. Our work aligns well with critical global initiatives such as the Paris Agreement, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions; so far EAMCEF has facilitated afforestation and rehabilitation of over 288 hectares of degraded forest, reduced forest fires by 70% (thus preventing the release of CO2 back into the atmosphere) and supported over 14,000 households adopt energy-efficient stoves, thereby reducing deforestation pressure for fuelwood. While CO2 does not directly harm the Ozone Layer, reducing greenhouse gas emissions helps to stabilize temperatures in the Stratosphere, aiding in Ozone recovery and shielding the planet from harmful UltraViolet (UV) radiations. EAMCEF urges everyone to recognize forests’ critical role in ozone protection and fostering a healthier planet, calling on all to join hands in supporting these initiatives. #OzoneForLife #ClimateAction #EAMCEF #ForestConservation #ParisAgreement #OzoneLayerProtection
